The Owd Betts Inn 1796

The stone building that is Owd Betts started life as a farmhouse. Richard and Mary Ashworth built it in 1796. By the 1800’s it was left to John Ashworth and his wife Betty where it became an Inn. The first title it operated under was "The hare and hounds" when John Ashworth died, his wife Betty continued to run the Inn alone. Because of this the Inn became known as "Owd Betts" Although it wasn’t until the 1950’s when the Inn officially changed its name from "The hare and hounds" to "Owd Betts" which remains to this day.

In 1893 Betty passed away at the age of 93. Today Owd Betts is well known in the area it stands, and is also popular with walkers who climb a nearby hill known as "Whittle Hill". Recently just behind the Inn there has been a wind farm constructed, but this does not take the real beauty away from this lovely 18th Century listed building. In fact it only attracts more visitors in which they in turn visit Owd Betts for refreshments. The condition of this building is a real credit to the owners, this truly is a master piece of old times!

This is a painting of Owd Bett herself. The actual photograph of Owd Bett which this picture is believed to be copied from, is featured on the wall above one of the 3 fireplaces inside the Inn. The menu even states that Owd Bett herself has been seen wandering the Inn as if still conducting her chores. Many people who have had the opportunity to take care of the Inn have claimed to have seen her on many occasions. The current owners of Owd Betts have told us that they also have experienced strange happenings within the Inn. Glasses flying off shelves and cold spots felt in certain parts of the building.
