How to EVP

In this article we will explain the best way to EVP or Electronic Voice Phenomena. First thing you should consider is which device you are going to use? Here is a choice of devices:

1. Laptop with microphone and software Example (Audacity)
2. Dictaphone with analogue tape.
3. Mp3 player/recorder digital (Recommended device)

Now once you have chosen your recording device you now have to conduct a small procedure. Start the recording and speak these words, "EVP 1 location, date, time." Then followed by something like "Is there anyone here who wishes to communicate with us, (Pause) If so could you please make a sound or speak to us." Wait 10 to 30 seconds max, then end by speaking "End of EVP 1" Repeat this procedure but each time replace EVP 1 with EVP 2 and so on. It is always important to give precise location date and time details for report analysis later. The EVP 1, 2 etc is like a clapper board system used in the production industry, this helps to find the start, end and a particular recording much quicker.

Once you have finished the procedure you want to play the recording back. Listen carefully for any strange sound or bangs, but most importantly listen for any voices that were not heard during the recording. If you have managed to captured sounds or voices that were not heard during the recording? This will more than likely be EVP!

It is amazing what EVP actually captures; sometimes you can not always hear the voices and have to transfer the recording to a computer for further analysis. To do this, just connect the device using the leads provided or if it is a Dictaphone, connect the headphone socket to the laptops microphone socket or the in port on a computer sound card using a lead and capture playback through Audacity.

There are many types of software you could use to analyse your EVP, Audacity is just one of many great audio software edit packages. It allows you to slow it down, speed it up, bend it, play it backwards, make it louder etc. So you really do have complete control over your captured EVP.
